Pioneers in Cartilage Restoration

Dr. Gábor Bodó, Professor and Head of the Equine Surgery Department at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, and Prof. Dr. László Hangody, a world-renowned human orthopedic and trauma surgeon, are leading experts in orthopedic surgery.

Over the past 25 years, in collaboration with the company Metrimed, they have successfully developed and perfected Mosaicplasty (Mozaik Artróplasztika – MP), a revolutionary technique that repairs joint injuries in racehorses, enabling them to fully recover and return to the track.

This groundbreaking method specifically targets joint cartilage and subchondral bone damage, treating injuries that were previously considered career-ending. It has been successfully applied in both human and veterinary medicine, delivering remarkable outcomes.

As the exclusive GCC region partner, Tamás Hovány (Chairman of Bahrain–Hungary Relations) is committed to introducing this unique medical solution to the Middle East, where horse racing is not only a sport but a centuries-old tradition and major economic sector.

What is Mosaic Arthroplasty?

Mosaic arthroplasty is a cutting-edge surgical technique used to treat damaged joint surfaces and subchondral bone in horses. Over a 25-year period, Dr. Gábor Bodó and an international team of specialists performed this procedure on 33 sport and racehorses with high-grade lameness. The results are compelling and prove the effectiveness of this advanced veterinary surgery.

This procedure restores joint function by transplanting cylindrical osteochondral grafts (bone + cartilage plugs) from healthy areas of the horse’s own body (autograft) into the damaged region. This allows for full structural healing of both the cartilage and underlying bone.
